Lone bull elephants carry a different energy than the herd — less patient, more territorial, prone to testing boundaries that a matriarch-led group would simply walk past. This one had been trailing our vehicle at a distance for several minutes, close enough that our guide's posture had visibly changed. Then he stopped trailing. He turned, and he came straight at us.

There was no charge, not quite — but there didn't need to be. A few deliberate steps forward, ears flared, trunk raised just enough to read as a warning rather than a greeting, and the entire jeep went silent. Bulls like this one, pushed out of the herd's usual rhythm and running on their own schedule, don't owe anyone the benefit of the doubt. We held still. He held his ground a moment longer, decided we weren't worth the effort, and let the tension drop as quickly as it had risen.
